Biography
John is currently the Director of Technology for the Eagle County School District in Eagle, Colorado. ECSD is in the heart of the Colorado ski country and serves 18 schools in Vail, Beaver Creek, and other major resorts. John also serves as an educational consultant with Los Angeles based Scope Seven in the development of Education and Training Programs for the company. Some of his responsibilities at Scope Seven include creating, developing and marketing the ee DVD (Educationally Enhanced DVD) concept. It is the first of its kind to combine  educationally sound materials with Hollywood films. The first ee DVD title, “Super Size Me” was released in March of 2005. This is an educational version of the award-winning, Academy nominated documentary. John is featured on the DVD, introducing the educational concepts of the film. Prior to Scope Seven, John retired as Associate Dean of Continuing Education from the University of Montana where he initiated the first complete online course environment and served as Executive Director for a multi-million dollar NASA research grant at UM which targeted classroom teachers.
Additionally, John serves as an educational consultant, delivering keynote addresses to conferences nationally and internationally. He was a keynote speaker at both the 2005 NSBA T&L Conference, and the Florida Educational Technology Conference - two of the nation's largest educational technology conferences. He has twice traveled to Australia after receiving an invitation from the Departments of Education in Victoria and South Australia to present a series of addresses to Australian educators. In May 2001, John received an invitation from the Crown Prince of Dubai to conduct the opening keynote for a leading education conference in the Persian Gulf. John was also the opening keynote speaker for over 12,000 attendees at NECC 2000 in Atlanta, as well as many regional and state conferences throughout the United States. He brings 30 combined years of experience in education, telecommunications, television production, and Internet technology to these efforts.
John began his career as a teacher, and then was promoted to Technology Director for School District One in Missoula, Montana. His responsibilities included developing technology planning and implementation for more than 10,000 students and 400 educators. He was recruited to join Telecommunications Inc. (TCI) as the founding Director of the Sparkman Center for Educational Technology located in Denver, Colorado. He was promoted to Vice-President of Training for ETC, a wholly owned education subsidiary of TCI. As Vice President, John developed and directed two nationally known technology-training centers. John then served as Senior Director of Technology for McREL (Mid-continent Research for Education and Learning). McREL is part of the US Department of Education's research and development lab system which serves all 50 states and 20 foreign countries.
John was named one of the Top 25 Education Technology Advocates in the United States by District Administrator magazine. He was featured on CNN for his innovative uses of technology in his classroom. USA Today selected him, as one of ten teachers nationwide, as a USA Today Power Teacher. He testified before the US Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation about new and emerging technologies in the classroom. John co-wrote and served as the on-air host for a ten part technology series on The Learning Channel called Best Seat in the Class, as well as numerous other nationally televised teacher in-service programs. He has also consulted with the Department of Defense to advance their online learning initiative.
John holds a Bachelor of Science from the University of Montana, Western where he received the Distinguished Alumni Award for 2003. He also earned a Masters of Education degree from Lesley University in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
